Research Blog: Music Video Conventions

I am doing a music video for the reggae song Lockdown by Koffee. In this music video I want to focus on the strong influential culture that Jamaica has and makes everyone smile. I will also adding in clips from the damage that the global crisis is doing to the country. This will let people know that everything is not peaches and cream and that their favorite vacation spot is going to be destroyed if we don’t act now.

  •  When it comes to reggae, the music usually has a meaning full message they’re trying to get across which happens to be peaceful, and a feel good way also know as “irie” in Jamaica. Every song is passionate and connects to the people. Listening to a reggae song automatically makes your body move due to the beat. You can see this in other reggae songs such as Toast by Koffee, Who am I by Beenie Man, and Could you be Loved by Bob Marley.
  • In this genre of music videos, the props used is Jamaica places, and communities. They also add in bright colors and Rasta’s also know as someone with dreads. The lighting reflects the vibe so it’s always natural sunlight. Another prop used is the community. In most videos, the community is behind the artistt or you can see them helping the community.
  • When regarding camera work, it is typically to use medium close ups and close ups. Another movement they use is hand held shots during the dancing parts. To add on, they use the common high, low angles, and pan.
  • For these music videos, as long as you have a story that can be followed with good beat it will be successful.
  • The Artist Koffee is only 20 years old but won her Grammy for her number 1 song “ Toast” at the age of 18. She is from Spanish Town, Jamaica and began her career at a young age to take her family out the struggle. You can hear about Koffee writing and collating with big names now such as DJ Khalid, Vybz Kartel, and Beyoncé.
  • The genre Reggae originated from Jamaica and influenced many genres such as dancehall, reggaeton, and hip-hop. It is known globally and you can see its influence in almost every country you travel to.
